About the game:

The deeper you go, the more expensive it is to be there

STRATA is an arcade descent through rock that breaks apart cell by cell. You guide a drilling capsule from a dome on the surface, and everything below the first meter is procedural geology: soil, clay, stone, shale, granite, basalt, obsidian, iron ore. Each layer is harder than the previous one, and the drill either gets through it or it doesn't.

Depth is the score. Depth is also the bill.

One resource for two jobs

Drilling generates heat. Shooting generates heat. It is the same meter.

The whole game in one phrase: “go another ten meters” and “fight off the wave” are one number divided in two. Waves come to the dome whether you are there or not, and it itself holds up poorly. Every time you decide to go through one more vein, you decide what the surface will lose.

The rock remembers

The world is not a backdrop with a drawn tunnel. Every mined cell remains mined. The shaft dug on the third run is still your shaft: the mine is the record of your decisions, left directly on the map. And it responds. Cave-ins block the road home. Gas pockets can be seen in advance — and then they blow an entire room out of the wall. Water holds. Lava flows downward through the passages that you opened for it. A sintered cell does not yield to the drill you have with you. And in the darkness behind you, someone is following, and it is not what hits the dome.

Light is information

The headlight narrows with depth. Ore shines through stone. Down below, you navigate not by the rock, but by what shows through it. There are no effects for the sake of effects here: light is a way to read the level.

What remains

A run lasts two to three minutes. Only credits can survive it, and credits buy permanent equipment: hull, tank, cooling, hold, and five drill tiers, each of which opens its own rock class. The entire tree costs over fifty thousand, and the bottom of the world does not open until it is paid for.

On top of that — run contracts, which pay only on ascent, dome specializations that change the meaning of the descent, relics, fossils, a depth journal, and a core at the bottom, which is not the end of the game, but the beginning of its second half.

Built without a single asset file

There are no graphics in this game. No sprites, no fonts, no sound files — there is only code on the disk. The font, sky, planets, nebulae, capsule, and every sound are generated at launch, anew every time. The download weighs several megabytes, and all of this is one source tree by one person.

Features

  • Fully destructible procedural geology, eight rock classes downward
  • Heat is shared between mining and defense — the entire run is one long trade-off
  • A dome that gets hit while you are away and that you will have to return to
  • Permanent progression: five equipment lines, five drill tiers
  • Contracts, dome specializations, relics, fossils, depth journal
  • Ten achievements — from the first delivered ore to the third core sample
  • Hazards that warn about themselves: cave-ins, gas, water, lava, seismic activity
  • Saving the descent in the middle of a run
  • Tutorial as a separate mode, not a wall of hints
  • English and Russian languages
