Immerse yourself in a huge underwater world
You have crash-landed in an alien ocean world, where the only way leads down. The oceans of Subnautica range from sun-drenched coral reefs to treacherous deep-sea trenches, lava fields and bioluminescent underwater rivers. Monitor your oxygen supply as you explore kelp forests, plateaus, reefs and winding cave systems. The waters teem with life: some of it is useful, much of it is dangerous.
Collect, craft and survive
After an emergency landing in a lifepod, a race against time begins to find water, food and create survival equipment. Collect resources in the ocean around you. Craft knives, diving equipment and personal water vehicles. Go deeper and farther in search of rarer resources that will allow you to craft more advanced items.
Build underwater homes
Build bases on the seabed. Choose layouts and elements, monitor integrity as depth and pressure increase. Use the base to store resources, dock vehicles and replenish oxygen supplies as you explore the vast ocean.
Unravel the mystery
What happened to this planet? There are plenty of signs that something is wrong. What caused you to crash? What is infecting the sea life? Who built the mysterious structures scattered throughout the ocean? Can you find a way to escape the planet alive?
Break the food chain
The ocean abounds with life: use the ecosystem to your advantage. Lure and distract a dangerous creature with fresh fish or simply swim as fast as you can to avoid wandering predators with gnashing jaws.
Overcome the pressure
Build the Prawn Suit (or “PRAWN”) and explore extreme depths and heat. Modify the suit with drills, torpedo launchers, propulsion cannons, grappling hooks and much more.
Beware of the night
When the sun sets, predators appear. The ocean does not forgive those caught by surprise in the dark. Places that are safe to explore during the day become treacherous at night, but also reveal a beauty that will never be seen by those who avoid the darkness.
Dive below the seabed
Below the seabed, cave systems branch out, from dark cramped passages to large caves illuminated by bioluminescent life and scorching lava flows. Explore the world beneath the ocean floor, but watch your oxygen level and beware of threats lurking in the dark.
About the development team
Subnautica is created by Unknown Worlds, a small studio founded by Charlie Cleveland and Max McGuire, which traces its roots back to the 2003 Half-Life mod “Natural Selection.” The team is scattered around the world: from the United States of America to the United Kingdom, France, the Czech Republic, Russia, Thailand, Australia and many other places. There is a central office in San Francisco, California, which serves as the base for the entire team.
