Expanded Access to AI Features in Instagram Will Come with a Price Tag

Head of Instagram Adam Mosseri revealed that the company is working on a subscription for users who hit free content generation limits. Built-in AI features are currently available for free, but request volumes are capped. Soon, users will be able to expand those limits through a paid subscription.

Why Meta Decided to Charge for AI

The reasoning is straightforward. Image and video generation is significantly more resource-intensive than running standard social network infrastructure. As more users generate content via neural networks, operational server loads scale rapidly.

According to Mosseri, Meta wants to maintain free baseline access, but the company cannot remove generation caps entirely. That is precisely why users will be offered a dedicated subscription tier with expanded limits.

What Is Known About the Subscription

Details remain limited. Meta has not disclosed pricing, launch timelines, or the full list of tools included in the premium tier. However, users are already encountering daily rate limits when using image and video generation features.

Based on statements from the head of Instagram, the subscription is primarily tailored toward power users who rely heavily on AI generation. For the vast majority of users, nothing will change: basic features will remain free.

Not long ago, major tech companies were focused on acquiring users with free AI tools. Now, they are shifting toward monetizing operational costs. Paid tiers first rolled out across OpenAI and Google. Now, Meta is preparing a similar subscription model.
