Meta introduces ad tax

Meta introduces an ad tax in six GEOs: what buyers need to know

Meta has found a way to shift its expenses onto the shoulders of advertisers and is starting to automatically deduct an additional fee when launching campaigns. The commission will be introduced on July 1, 2026.

The innovation affects six popular countries: the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Spain, Austria, and Turkey. The tax is deducted on top of the advertising budget, which noticeably increases the final cost of traffic.

The reason for these measures is local digital services laws, under which IT companies are required to pay taxes to the budgets of these states. Previously, Meta covered such expenses on its own, but now it has decided to completely get rid of this financial burden. Now, an additional percentage will simply be added to your billing.

The main catch is exactly how this commission is calculated. The tax is linked neither to the country of registration of the ad account nor to the bank where your card was issued. The system looks precisely at the GEO of the audience to whom the ads are shown. Because of this, it won't be possible to bypass the algorithm using traditional methods, such as changing the time zone in the ad manager or linking a payment method with a different BIN. If the ad is shown to residents of Turkey, the tax will automatically be realities as Turkish.

As of today, the rates are as follows:

  • Austria — 5%;

  • Turkey — 5%;

  • France — 3%;

  • Italy — 3%;

  • Spain — 3%;

  • United Kingdom — 2%.

For webmasters and teams heavily driving traffic to Europe or Turkey, this update means an inevitable drop in net profit. A 5% tax can noticeably cut ROI over the long haul, especially when working with large volumes of traffic. When calculating the profitability of combinations, these expenses will now have to be factored in beforehand; otherwise, real income will be an unpleasant surprise at the end of the month.

The only way to maintain former margins is to factor the tax into the lead cost or look for alternative GEOs to drive traffic where Meta has not yet introduced such commissions.
