TikTok Fires Moderators in Favor of AI

TikTok Fires Moderators: Another Storm is Approaching

TikTok has launched a massive restructuring of its Trust & Safety department — the very people who handled manual content moderation, reviewed appeals, and made decisions regarding account bans. A significant portion of the workforce is being laid off, while the remaining employees are being transferred to several regional hubs to centralize management. Control over creatives and accounts is being handed over to neural networks and automated algorithms.

What This Changes

In TikTok, they claim cost optimization and AI efficiency. But in reality, manual verification is being removed. Yet, live moderators used to act as a buffer between buyers and automated bans.

A live person could evaluate the context of a video, understand humor, or approve a creative that formally balances on the edge of the rules but does not break them directly. A robot operates based on rigid patterns, trigger words, and pixel masks. For the market, this means a complete overhaul of the approach to passing moderation.

Two Scenarios for the Coming Weeks

Any replacement of live moderators with algorithms during the initial months results in chaos on the platform. Buyers should prepare for two parallel processes.

Technical storms. AI moderation during its calibration phase will start banning everything in its path. Even white-hat e-commerce and harmless app-targeted creatives will get caught in the crossfire. Robots will wipe out agency accounts and self-registered accounts due to a match of a couple of pixels or suspicious stop-words in the voiceover.

Loopholes. Flaws will inevitably be found in the code of automated filters. While the neural network is training, specific setups, creative approaches, or video uniqueization methods will start flying through moderation.

What to Do Right Now

There is no need to panic, but taking precautions is necessary. Teams have already started changing their traffic source strategies. A step-by-step action plan for the coming days:

  • Export all active statistics and wait for optimization trends on current campaigns, without making sudden changes to performing ad sets.

  • Prepare backup payment methods and new pools of accounts — old ones could get flagged at any moment.

  • Test new tools for generating creatives via other neural networks to bypass TikTok's own algorithms.

  • Allocate a dedicated test budget to discover moderation bugs while the platform's code is in a transitional phase.

The market experienced storms during every major update of Facebook and Google Ads, and TikTok will be no exception here. Whoever is the first to understand the logic of the updated robot and find the blind spots in automated moderation will capture all the profit.
