Telegram added Web Proxy to the Android beta. The feature is already available on PC and is now being tested on smartphones.
What is wrong with the old proxies
Until now, MTProto and SOCKS5 remained the main ways to bypass blocks in the messenger. However, ISP filtering systems have learned to detect them easily and quickly ban such servers. Because of this, users have to regularly search for new working proxies or enable a VPN.
How Web Proxy works
The new type of proxy transmits messenger data through web transport. In practice, it hides Telegram traffic inside standard HTTPS requests to regular websites:
-
Complete masking. To the ISP and surveillance systems, it looks as though the user has simply opened a page in a regular browser rather than exchanging messages in a blocked app.
-
Long server lifespan. Blocking such an address individually is much more difficult: if an ISP blindly blocks standard web traffic, it risks breaking access to a large number of regular websites on the internet.
-
Stable connection. The connection does not drop during calls, while messages and videos load without long freezes.
For now, the feature is available only in the Android beta, but it should be rolled out in the stable release in one of the upcoming updates.
