Click ID — is a unique identifier (a combination of numbers and letters) assigned to each user click on an advertising link.
It is the main technical bridge that connects an ad click with a target action (registration, purchase, or deposit). Without a Click ID, the tracking system will not understand which webmaster and which specific ad should receive credit for the lead.
How It Works in Practice
-
The user sees an ad on a social network or search engine and clicks on it.
-
The tracker or advertising system generates a unique Click ID and records it in the link parameters.
-
The user lands on the landing page, and the tracker stores this ID in the browser cookies.
-
If the user completes a target action (for example, makes an FTD), the system reads the same click_id and sends a postback (notification) to the affiliate network: «The lead from click a1b2c3d4e5f6 has been completed, credit the payout to the affiliate marketer».
Why an Affiliate Marketer Should Understand Click ID
-
End-to-end analytics: makes it possible to know exactly which specific setup, creative, or audience generated revenue and which ones — only wasted the budget.
-
Protection against lost leads: if the funnel is configured incorrectly and the Click ID is lost along the way (for example, because of extra redirects), the leads are not attributed to the webmaster — the advertiser gets the customer, but the conversion is not credited in the affiliate marketer’s statistics.
Important: correct Click ID transmission — is the foundation of technical reliability when launching a campaign. Before starting a campaign, you should always use a test click to check whether the ID reaches the tracker and affiliate network; otherwise, all analytics will turn into a blind spot.
