Domain parking — is placing a purchased domain name on a special page provided by a registrar or hosting provider. There is no full website on such a page; it usually displays a placeholder showing that the domain is taken or affiliate advertising blocks. Domains are kept this way «for future use» or for later resale.
Domain parking in traffic arbitrage
In traffic arbitrage, «domain parking» refers to connecting a purchased domain to a tracker or landing page hosting through DNS records.
There is no need to build a website on such a domain. It acts as a clean link for advertising: advertising networks often block direct affiliate program links, so traffic is routed through your own domain.
Why domain linking is needed
-
Bypassing moderation. Advertising networks trust a clean domain much more than technical tracker or affiliate program links.
-
Link masking. The link looks clean and natural to the user, without bulky technical parameters.
-
Management flexibility. All statistics, traffic distribution and changes to landing page links are configured in one place (in the tracker) without the need to recreate the ads.
Advantages
-
Setup protection. The affiliate program and third-party observers see only your intermediary domain, not the internal technical chain of the campaign.
-
Easy setup. A domain can be connected to a modern tracker or hosting service in just a few steps by configuring the required DNS records with the registrar.
-
Traffic flow control. Different traffic distributions can be configured on a single domain depending on GEO or user devices.
Disadvantages
-
Purchase costs. Domains cost money, and if a domain name gets banned for violating platform rules, it has to be replaced and a new one purchased.
-
Need for warm-up. Completely «fresh» domains with no history may attract extra attention from advertising network moderation.
-
Risk of campaign interruption. If the domain gets blocked, advertising stops until a new address is connected.
Where it is used
Linking and using your own domains is common across different areas of traffic arbitrage when launching campaigns through third-party advertising networks: social networks, search, native and teaser networks.
Important to know
You should not use the same domain indefinitely for risky advertising campaigns. Advertising systems accumulate history for domain names, so for gray verticals, domains need to be changed regularly by purchasing new ones and giving them time to age.
