Escrow agent

Escrow agent — is an intermediary who helps protect both parties in a transaction from fraud. The buyer sends the money to the middleman instead of the seller. The middleman holds the money and releases it to the seller only after the buyer receives the product or service and confirms that everything is satisfactory. If the deal falls through, the money is returned to the buyer.

This is how «safe deals» work on many online platforms. On classified ad websites, when purchasing an item with delivery, the platform holds the payment until the buyer receives the order. On freelance marketplaces, the client first deposits money with the platform, and the freelancer receives it only after completing the work.

Escrow agent in traffic arbitrage

Affiliate marketers constantly buy and sell things to each other: accounts, traffic, domains, social media pages and channels, as well as services such as creating ad creatives, technical setup or account farming. These deals often take place between strangers on Telegram or forums, and neither party wants to pay or deliver the product first. A middleman solves this problem. In stores selling consumables, a middleman is usually unnecessary because they have their own payment and replacement policies.

A middleman can be a dedicated service, the administration of a forum or chat, or sometimes an individual with a good reputation among affiliate marketers. On Telegram, many transactions are handled through escrow bots.

How a deal through a middleman works

  1. Both parties agree on the terms: what exactly will be delivered, at what price and how the buyer will verify the product.

  2. The buyer transfers the transaction amount to the middleman.

  3. The middleman informs the seller that the money has been received.

  4. The seller delivers the product or completes the work.

  5. The buyer checks everything and confirms the deal, after which the middleman transfers the money to the seller.

If either party is dissatisfied, the middleman reviews the dispute and decides who should receive the money: the seller or the buyer as a refund.

How much do middleman services cost?

Middleman services are paid. They usually charge a percentage of the transaction amount, sometimes a fixed fee. The parties decide in advance who pays the commission — the buyer, the seller or both equally.

How to avoid a fake middleman

Scammers also use this term to deceive people. They create impersonations of well-known escrow services: cloned websites and Telegram accounts with almost identical names and profile pictures. A common scheme is when the seller offers a «trusted middleman» and sends a link to their account, but the account actually belongs to the seller's accomplice or the seller themselves.

To avoid getting scammed:

  • choose the middleman yourself rather than relying on the other party's recommendation;

  • get the middleman's contact details from the official website of the service or forum, not from a link sent in a conversation;

  • check the Telegram username character by character: impersonators often change just one letter.

Important: in a dispute, the middleman relies only on the terms agreed upon by both parties before the transaction. If those terms are vague, such as simply saying «the account works», it will be difficult for both the buyer and the seller to prove their case. That's why you should discuss the terms in as much detail as possible before transferring any money.
