Fake engagement — is the artificial increase of metrics on social media and other platforms: followers, likes, views, comments and reactions. The numbers grow not because people liked the content, but because someone paid for them.
Almost anything that can be counted can be artificially boosted: Instagram followers and TikTok followers, Telegram channel members, YouTube views, likes and comments on posts, reviews and ratings in app stores and marketplaces.
How it works
Fake engagement is usually purchased through specialized services: you choose a platform, the type of action and the quantity, make a payment and receive the results after some time. These actions are performed by:
-
Bots — automated accounts that follow, like and watch content without human involvement. This is the cheapest option, but such accounts are easy to detect: empty profiles, no activity and identical names;
-
Real people — users who complete tasks for a small reward. This is more expensive but looks more natural. This type of traffic is called incentivized traffic.
Why people use fake engagement
People find it easier to trust something that others have already chosen. Someone is more likely to follow an account with 10,000 followers than an empty one, and more likely to trust a post with lots of likes and comments. That's why fake engagement is often used at the beginning to make a new account or channel look less abandoned.
Fake engagement in traffic arbitrage
Affiliate marketers use fake engagement not as their main way of attracting people, but to support their primary activities: boosting followers to make a profile look active before directing its audience to Telegram or a website; increasing members and views in Telegram channels that receive traffic; and adding reactions and comments to posts to make new visitors trust them more.
Risks
-
Follower drops. Platforms regularly remove bots, so some artificially gained followers disappear over time.
-
Shadowban and account suspension. A sudden spike in followers or likes — is a noticeable signal for anti-spam systems, especially on a new account.
-
Declining reach. Artificially gained followers don't view or like new posts. The platform sees that the audience isn't interested in the content and starts showing it less frequently.
Important: fake engagement only creates the appearance of popularity but doesn't attract new real users. If you use fake engagement, increase the numbers gradually and in volumes that resemble natural growth, while focusing primarily on content that attracts a genuine audience.
