Hold (Hold) — is a period during which a system, affiliate program or bank delays a payout to check traffic quality, rule out fraud or wait for the conditions to be met.
Even if the transaction is recorded, the money cannot be withdrawn or spent during the hold.
Where a Hold Is Used
In affiliate marketing (CPA): payouts to affiliates are delayed to check traffic quality and rule out fraud.
In e-commerce and marketplaces: the withdrawal of money to the seller is delayed while the warranty or product return period remains active.
In banking and fintech: a temporary restriction on withdrawing funds for new customers or during the review of suspicious transactions.
Why a Hold Is Needed
A hold protects the system from dishonest participants and risks. During the hold, the following are checked:
-
quality and authenticity: for example, user activity, the legitimacy of the transaction or order buyouts;
-
fraud and deception: bots, fake data and other violations;
-
compliance with the rules: fulfillment of the offer, contract or service terms.
How Long a Hold Lasts
The period is set by the platform, bank or advertiser. It may be several days, two weeks, a month or longer.
For verified partners and customers with a good history, platforms often reduce or completely remove the hold.
Hold and Decline — What Is the Difference
Beginners often confuse these statuses in the account:
-
Hold — the payout or amount is temporarily unavailable while the review is in progress. After the hold ends, the money becomes available.
-
Decline — the transaction is not accepted or the money is returned to the payer.
Important: If the reviewing party has doubts about the legality of the transaction or traffic quality, the hold may be extended to conduct an additional review.
