Media Buyer

Media Buyer (from the English buyer — a purchaser) — is a specialist who buys paid traffic from advertising networks, sets up and optimizes campaigns, and directs users to target pages or offers in order to generate profit.

Media Buyer vs. Affiliate Marketer: What Is the Difference?

In the affiliate marketing industry, these terms are often used as synonyms, but there is an important difference between them. «Affiliate marketer» — is a broader concept: it is any specialist who earns on the difference between the cost of acquiring traffic and the payout for a target action (including those who generate free traffic — organic traffic, create doorways, or develop channel networks). A media buyer — is specifically an affiliate marketer who works exclusively with paid traffic (Media Buying): buys impressions and clicks through ad accounts and turns the invested budget into profitable returns.

While in traditional marketing a media buyer usually works to increase brand awareness within a company's fixed budget, in traffic arbitrage their task is very specific: invest money in advertising and earn from payouts from an affiliate program or direct advertiser. The difference between traffic costs and conversion revenue is the net profit.

What Exactly Does a Media Buyer Do?

A media buyer's work is not limited to simply clicking the «Launch Ads» button. It is a continuous cycle of hypotheses, tests, and analytics:

  • Finding and building setups: the media buyer chooses an offer, selects a relevant GEO (country), develops approaches for the target audience, and prepares briefs for designers to create creatives or creates them independently.

  • Technical setup: configuring trackers, setting up postbacks, connecting payment methods, warming up and preparing advertising resources (accounts, proxies, antidetect browsers).

  • Testing and optimization: running the first budgets, eliminating placements, targeting options, creatives, and landing pages that do not convert.

  • Scaling: if a setup becomes profitable (shows a high ROI), the media buyer increases the budget — raises bids, duplicates campaigns, connects new accounts, or adapts the setup for related GEOs to get the maximum volume before the setup burns out.

Main Areas of Work

Media buyers are rarely universal «jacks of all trades» — traffic sources and verticals differ too much:

  • By traffic source: media buyers specializing in Facebook/Instagram, Google Ads, TikTok, Telegram Ads, native and teaser networks, push/pop networks, SEO traffic.

  • By vertical: specialists focused on gambling/betting, nutra, crypto/info products, dating, e-commerce, or mobile utilities.

Work Formats: Solo or Team

  • Solo media buyer: works independently using their own working capital. They pay for resources, software, and tests themselves, keep all net profit, but also personally bear all financial risks.

  • Media buyer in an affiliate team (Media Buying Team): runs traffic using the team's working capital and is responsible for the result. The team provides everything necessary: accounts, payment methods, ready-made creatives from in-house designers, and private offers from advertisers. At the same time, the media buyer remains the strategist behind the setup: they develop new approaches, prepare briefs for designers, find working setups, analyze the numbers, and decide when to scale a campaign and when to stop it in time to avoid wasting the budget. The media buyer receives a certain percentage of the net profit.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

A media buyer's performance is evaluated by hard numbers:

  • ROI (Return on Investment): return on advertising investment.

  • CPA (Cost Per Action) / CPL / CPO: the actual cost of a target action (registration, application, purchase).

  • CR (Conversion Rate): the conversion rate from a click to a lead or payment.

  • Volume (Profit / Spend): the amount of money a specialist can consistently spend profitably without a decline in traffic quality.
