Shadowban — is a hidden restriction where an account continues to function normally, but the platform almost stops showing its content to other people. Posts and videos no longer appear in recommendations, search results or hashtag feeds. No notifications are sent: from the creator's perspective, everything looks normal, but views suddenly drop.
For example, videos on an account were consistently getting 3–5 thousand views, but then, in a single day, all new videos got stuck at 20–50 views, with almost all views coming from followers. If the content hasn't changed, this is a typical sign of a shadowban.
Why is it called a «shadow» ban?
A regular ban is immediately noticeable: the account gets blocked, a post is removed, or a notification arrives. A shadowban works invisibly: the platform doesn't notify the user, who may continue publishing content for weeks while almost nobody sees it.
Officially, most platforms don't use the term «shadowban». YouTube explicitly states that no such mechanism exists. Instagram calls it a recommendation restriction and displays it in the «Account Status» section. Reddit is an exception: shadowbanning exists there as an official tool. Posts from a shadowbanned user are visible only to that user, while everyone else sees nothing.
Most common reasons for getting shadowbanned
-
Spam activity: mass liking, following and commenting within a short period;
-
Links: a link in the bio of a new or empty profile, direct links to gray-area offers in posts;
-
Non-unique content: reuploads of other people's videos or the same file posted across multiple accounts;
-
Policy violations: copyrighted music, prohibited topics, trigger words in text or voiceovers;
-
User reports: if content is frequently reported, the platform reduces its visibility;
-
Technical setup: datacenter proxies, multiple accounts on the same device or IP address, causing the platform to link the profiles together.
How to tell if an account is shadowbanned
The main sign — is a sudden drop in views to almost zero across all new posts, even though previous content performed normally. There are several ways to check:
-
Check traffic sources in analytics. If almost all views come from followers and none come from recommendations, the content isn't reaching new audiences;
-
Search for your post from another account using a hashtag, topic tag or exact title. If it still doesn't appear in search results after 24 hours, there are likely restrictions;
-
Check the account status in settings. Many platforms show whether there are recommendation restrictions and which content caused them.
Shadowban or poor content
Not every drop in reach means a shadowban. Beginners often blame ordinary underperforming videos on it.
-
Shadowban — views drop suddenly across the entire account, even on videos that would previously have performed well.
-
Poor content — some posts perform well while others don't, and reach declines gradually. In this case, the problem is the hook, topic or presentation rather than restrictions.
Shadowbans in traffic arbitrage
For affiliate marketers working with organic traffic, shadowbanning — is one of the biggest problems. It's more dangerous than a regular ban: the account appears active, and you can keep uploading content that nobody sees for a long time without understanding why there are no clicks.
New accounts without history or warm-up are most commonly shadowbanned: the platform doesn't trust them yet and reacts to any sudden activity. The risk is higher when running a network of accounts. If accounts are linked through a shared device, IP address or identical content, restrictions may affect the entire network at once.
How to recover from a shadowban
There is no official way to remove the restriction, but in practice, the following steps usually help:
-
stop the activity that may have triggered the ban: mass actions, frequent posting or links;
-
delete content that may have violated the rules and remove the link from the profile;
-
check the proxies and the number of accounts on the device;
-
let the account rest for several days without activity, then gradually return to posting, starting with one neutral post per day.
Based on experience, restrictions are usually lifted within a few days or a couple of weeks. However, if new posts still consistently get zero views after the account has rested, it's easier to replace the account than try to build its reach again.
Important: reuploading the same video in the hope of escaping a shadowban is pointless. The platform may identify it as a duplicate, and the restrictions may last even longer.
