SubID — is an additional tag in an affiliate link that helps track in more detail where a click came from and which part of the traffic generated a conversion.
SubID itself does not «track» anything — it simply passes a text value (tag) that is stored and processed by the affiliate network or tracker. You can include any data in a SubID: creative name, placement, ad position, GEO or the ID of a specific click.
How it works in practice
SubID is added to the affiliate link as a parameter. For example: (https://partner-link.com/offer?subid=creative_1)
-
The affiliate marketer sets different SubIDs for different ads or creatives.
-
The user clicks the link, and the tracker or affiliate network stores the tag (creative_1) together with the click.
-
If the user completes the target action, the conversion is linked to this SubID.
-
The statistics then show how many clicks and how much revenue this specific creative generated.
Why it is needed
It allows you to analyze traffic in detail and find setups that generate profit. You can work without SubID, but then the statistics will be blind — the affiliate marketer sees the overall figures but does not understand which specific ad or placement is wasting the budget.
Important to know
The parameter name and the number of available tags depend on the specific affiliate network or tracker. It can be subid, aff_sub, sid, s1, etc. Some systems support several levels at once (subid1, subid2). Before launching, it is always worth checking the network documentation: different platforms have different limits on the maximum tag length and allowed characters.
