Traffic Source

Traffic Source — is any platform, service, or advertising system on the internet that users come from (clicks, views, visits).

This is a basic term in all of digital marketing. Everyone works with traffic sources: from online store owners and marketers at major brands to bloggers and web analysts. For businesses, these are channels for attracting customers and generating sales, while for web analytics systems (Yandex Metrica, Google Analytics) — they show exactly where a person came to the website from.

In traffic arbitrage, a traffic source — is the starting point of the entire setup: the place where the audience is located, which the affiliate marketer attracts (paid or free) and directs to a landing page, pre-landing page, or directly to an affiliate program offer.

Traffic source vs. advertising network: what is the difference?

These concepts are often used as synonyms, although there is a difference between them. An advertising network — is a specific platform or system through which advertising is purchased, while a traffic source — is a broader concept.

Social networks as a whole — are a traffic source, while Meta Ads — is an advertising service for buying that traffic. At the same time, in traffic arbitrage, Facebook Ads, Google Ads, or TikTok Ads are also often simply called traffic sources.

Paid and free traffic sources

By the way the audience is acquired, all channels are divided into two groups:

  • Paid (Paid Traffic): impressions are purchased through an ad account or ad exchange with payment for clicks (CPC), impressions (CPM), or target actions. The advantage — is a fast launch and the ability to immediately buy the required volume.

  • Organic (Organic Traffic): traffic is attracted through content, getting into recommendation feeds, or search engine optimization (SEO). The platform does not charge for the click itself, but the affiliate marketer spends time and resources on account resources (accounts, proxies, software).

Types of traffic sources

  • Targeted advertising on social media (Facebook Ads, Instagram, TikTok Ads): buying traffic based on data about users’ interests, behavior, gender, and age. It provides huge reach, high engagement, and flexible settings for the required target audience.

  • Organic traffic from social media (Organic / SMM / Video Platforms): attracting people through content and platform recommendation algorithms. In business, this is classic content marketing for building an audience, while in traffic arbitrage — it is a way to get free reach through viral posts and direct interested users further through the funnel.

  • Search advertising (Google Ads, Yandex Direct): showing ads in response to a specific user search query. This is one of the «hottest» types of traffic because the user has already formed a specific search query.

  • Organic search traffic and SEO (websites, doorway networks): attracting free traffic from search engine results. It requires time for indexing, technical skills, and the ability to work with ranking algorithms.

  • Messengers (Telegram, WhatsApp): official advertising (Telegram Ads), direct paid placements in channels, or redirecting the audience into your own bots and networks. This source is characterized by high engagement and audience trust.

  • Native and teaser networks (MGID, Taboola, etc.): blocks with intriguing headlines and images embedded into news and content websites in the form of recommendations. A classic source for e-commerce and nutra.

  • Push networks: clickable pop-up notifications that appear on subscribers’ smartphone or browser screens. High-volume, inexpensive traffic for simple offers (dating, utilities, sweepstakes).

  • Pop networks (Popunder, Clickunder): advertising that opens in a new background tab or window when the user clicks anywhere on a website. Very cheap and «cold» traffic based on accidental interest and an immediate emotional response.

How to choose a traffic source for an offer

There are no universal platforms — the same offer can produce completely opposite results in different sources. The choice depends on three factors:

  1. Demand temperature: if the user has an urgent problem (repairs, a loan, searching for a specific service) — search advertising is used; if the purchase is based on a spontaneous emotional response (weight loss, gambling, dating) — social networks, native ads, or push traffic are used.

  2. Moderation and rules: «white-hat» offers can run freely on Google and Meta; «gray-hat» verticals (gambling, adult, nutra) require either complex technical solutions (cloaking) or moving to more tolerant networks (teasers, push, pops).

  3. Budget: testing on Facebook or Google Ads requires substantial capital for resources and tests, while with push, pop, or organic traffic, a working setup can be found with a small budget.

Important: before launching advertising, you need to check the rules of the specific traffic source. The same offer, creative, or promotion method may be allowed on one platform and prohibited on another.
