UTM tags — are special text suffixes added to a regular website link to track exactly where a user came from. The page itself opens as usual, but analytics systems and trackers read the added parameters and show precise statistics for each click.
In traffic arbitrage and internet marketing, UTM tags — are one of the main tools for tracking advertising traffic. They make it easier to understand which specific ad generated a lead, which banner performed best, and which audience the advertising budget was spent on.
What a tagged link looks like
Parameters are added to a regular website address after a question mark:
site.com/?utm_source=telegram&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=summer_sale
What a standard UTM tag consists of
There are five classic parameters that help organize traffic:
-
utm_source (source): indicates the advertising platform the visit came from (for example, google, telegram, vk, yandex).
-
utm_medium (traffic type): shows the format or traffic channel (for example, cpc — clicks, banner — banner, email — mailing, story — story).
-
utm_campaign (campaign name): identifies a specific advertising campaign or product (for example, skidka_50, iphone15_launch).
-
utm_content (content): helps distinguish similar ads within the same campaign, for example, button color, image format, or different text (red_button, video_v1).
-
utm_term (keyword): used in contextual advertising to record the keyword or search query through which a person clicked the ad (kupit_krossovki).
Why an affiliate marketer should use tags
-
Accurate analytics: you can see which setup brings real registrations or purchases and which one simply wastes the budget.
-
Creative testing: you can test different banner or video variations and see which approach delivers better conversion and cheaper leads.
-
Passing data to the affiliate program and tracker: dynamic parameters and macros allow you to pass click, placement, creative, and other data to a tracker or affiliate system for campaign optimization.
What is important to consider when tagging
-
Consistent letter case: analytics systems may treat telegram and Telegram as different values, so it is better to use one letter case for all tags, usually lowercase.
-
Latin characters and no spaces: it is better to use Latin characters in tags and avoid spaces. Words can be separated with an underscore (summer_sale) or a hyphen (summer-sale).
-
Special characters in the link: the question mark is used only once — before the very first parameter, while all subsequent tags are connected with the & symbol.
