Vertical — is a broad category in traffic arbitrage that brings together offers with similar themes and target audiences. Examples include dating, gambling, betting, nutra and e-commerce.
Simply put, a vertical indicates the industry an affiliate marketer works in and what exactly they promote: health products, gambling, betting, dating services, financial products and so on.
How a vertical differs from a niche
These concepts are related but refer to different levels of scope.
A vertical — is a broad category that can include many different offers. A niche — is a narrower category within a vertical.
For example, Nutra is a vertical, while weight loss products, joint health treatments or cosmetics can be separate niches within it. Dating can be divided into niches such as serious relationships, adult dating and other narrower categories.
However, the boundaries between verticals and niches aren't always strictly defined. What one team considers a separate vertical, another may classify as a niche within a broader category.
Main verticals in traffic arbitrage
-
Nutra — products related to health, beauty and personal care: dietary supplements, weight loss products, cosmetics and other similar offers.
-
Gambling — real-money gambling: online casinos, slots, poker and other gaming products.
-
Betting — betting on sports, esports and other events.
-
Dating — dating services and apps for meeting people, communicating and finding relationships.
-
Adult — content and services for audiences aged 18+, including webcam platforms, subscriptions and other adult products.
-
E-commerce — selling physical products online: electronics, clothing, home goods, automotive products and other categories.
-
Finance — financial products and services: credit, loans, bank cards, insurance, investment products and other offers.
-
Crypto — cryptocurrency-related products and services: exchanges, exchange services, wallets and other solutions for working with digital assets.
The same offer can sometimes belong to several verticals at once. For example, a cryptocurrency casino falls at the intersection of Crypto and Gambling, while a dating app featuring 18+ content belongs to both Dating and Adult.
Why affiliate marketers need to understand verticals
A vertical helps identify the main aspects of working with an offer: which audience it targets, where traffic can be purchased, what advertising restrictions apply and which payment models are most common.
The vertical also influences approaches to creatives, landing pages and traffic source selection. For example, advertising financial products and gambling will be perceived differently by audiences and will go through advertising platform moderation differently.
