Cloudflare Launches Crypto Wallets for AI Agents: They Will Be Able to Pay for APIs and Services on Their Own

Cloudflare introduced Wallets — crypto wallets for AI agents. The idea is simple: if an agent needs a paid API, database or another online service while working, it will be able to pay for access on its own without human involvement.

What the New Wallets Can Do

A separate wallet can be created for each AI agent. The owner decides how much money can be spent, which services are allowed and how much the agent can spend at one time.

After that, the agent will be able to pay for the required services on its own. The owner will not have to confirm each transaction manually.

How Payments Will Work

Payments work through the x402 protocol. Its purpose — is to remove unnecessary steps when purchasing access to paid services.

If an AI agent needs to use a paid API, the service will immediately provide the cost of the request. After payment, the agent will repeat the request and gain access to the required resource. At the same time, creating a separate account, purchasing a subscription or obtaining an API key for each new service will not be required.

Why cloudflare.pay Is Needed

Along with Wallets, the company is launching the cloudflare.pay service.

Cloudflare.pay is needed so that the service immediately understands who sent the request. For example, that the request was sent not by a random bot but by an AI agent working on behalf of a specific user or company. This will be useful where it is important to confirm exactly who is requesting paid access.

What This Changes

Cloudflare is betting that in the future, AI agents will not only search for information or execute commands but also use paid services independently.

For example, if an agent needs access to a database, analytics service or paid API while working, it will not have to wait for human confirmation. If the owner has authorized such operations in advance and configured restrictions, the agent will be able to pay for access on its own and continue performing the task.
