TikTok No Longer Favors Short Videos

New TikTok algorithms are killing short videos

It looks like the times when you could rack up millions of views thanks to a five-second dance to a viral track are coming to an end. In May 2026, analysts discovered updates to the TikTok algorithms. The platform has begun openly suffocating ultra-short content, redirecting all organic reach toward long and substantive videos.

New retention requirements

The main reason for the drop in reach was the new audience retention requirements. Previously, for a video to be promoted, it was enough for the system if a person watched at least half of it. Now the rules have tightened: the video must be watched to at least 70% completion.

Holding a viewer's attention for a minute or more is much harder than for a couple of seconds. Because of this, the system has begun prioritizing creators who know how to produce content with a twisted plot and a hook right at the beginning that forces the viewer to watch until the end.

Trending: mini-series, podcasts, and horizontal format

The new completion requirements are completely changing the recommendation feed. Instead of fast and chaotic content, long conversational videos ranging from one to three minutes, fully-fledged mini-series, and detailed video instructions are entering the trends en masse.

Modern trends show that TikTok is actively encouraging content creators to switch to a YouTube-style horizontal format, promising boosted views for high-quality videos that last over one minute.

The platform is trying to retain a mature, high-paying audience for as long as possible, forcing people not just to mindlessly swipe their screens, but to thoughtfully watch complete storylines.

What bloggers and brands should do

Chasing video quantity no longer works. In 2026, algorithms evaluate account expertise and precise niche alignment rather than daily spamming of short videos. Now, content creators have to completely rewrite their scripts:

  • Forget about long intros. The first three seconds must immediately address the audience's pain points; otherwise, the viewer will swipe away, and the algorithm will penalize the video for poor completion rates.

  • Use episodic formatting. Stories broken down into logical parts compel users to visit the profile, search for the next part, and browse older videos at the same time. This signals the system that the content is highly engaging.

  • Bet on substance. On-screen text, clear keywords in the description, and original voiceovers now carry significantly more weight than using someone else's trending sounds.

TikTok is trying to evolve from a format of five-second clips for teenagers into a fully-fledged video hosting platform. Now, to capture traffic volumes, you will have to rely on long-form videos with a strong plot.
