Risk Payment (risk payment, risk pay) — a restriction related to payments in an Ads Manager. It occurs when the advertising platform considers the payment method or payment activity suspicious.
What can trigger a Risk Payment restriction
Platforms use anti-fraud systems and check not only the card itself but also the account’s payment activity. Suspicion may be triggered by, for example:
-
declined or failed payments;
-
unusual payment activity;
-
the use of a payment method that the system considers suspicious;
-
sudden changes in payments or billing;
-
other signs that cause the platform to submit the payments or account for additional verification.
However, the platform does not always disclose the exact reason for the restriction. Therefore, a Risk Payment restriction alone cannot reliably determine whether the problem is specifically related to the card’s BIN, the payment method’s GEO, or a particular action taken by the media buyer.
In traffic arbitrage chats, you may come across phrases such as «got hit with risk pay» or «the account got banned for risk». This usually refers specifically to a payment and billing issue rather than a violation of advertising rules.
Important: Risk Payment should not be confused with Policy. In the case of Policy, the platform restricts advertising due to a violation of its rules: the issue may be with the creative, text, landing page, or product itself. Risk Payment is related to the payment side of the Ads Manager.
